How much will my bathroom remodel cost?
The cost of a bathroom remodel depends on several factors. There are, however,
four major factors to consider:
- Are you doing a full remodel or just an update?
- How big is your bathroom?
- What is the quality (and price) grade of the fixtures and finishes you’ve chosen?
- How many unseen damages exist behind the surfaces? Factors like mold, wood rot, or termite damage have to be considered when figuring out how much your remodel will cost.
How can I save money?
At Handyman Matters, we will help you minimize the cost of your bathroom remodeling project. If you are looking for cost efficient alternatives, we encourage you to buy your own materials, saving you money. We can even tell you what to get! We also allow you to provide “sweat-equity”; you can work beside us to get the bathroom remodeling project completed more quickly. Also, with all our projects, you only pay for the time spent working on your project. Unlike a fixed bid, we do not build in “blue-sky what-ifs.” This alone can often cut down on the cost tremendously.
Should I replace my old cast Iron tub?
If the tub does not have to be removed to repair the sub flooring, we often recommend simply refinishing the tub’s surface. This is often preferable to replacing the tub with a less durable poly or fiberglass tub, and you get to keep the quality of the sturdy cast iron tub.
Can I change the layout of my bathroom?
The standard bathroom size is often five foot wide by eight foot deep, with little option for layout. We can, however, often capture space from adjoining rooms to better accommodate different layouts and more space.
Should I change out my fixtures or reuse my existing fixtures?
Fixtures are the mechanical parts of your bathroom, and like any machine they wear out with use. Unless your fixtures are less than a year old, we recommend changing them out with new ones, especially when it comes to your shower or tub valves. These valves are behind walls and are difficult to get to once installed. This makes your bathroom remodel time the best time to change them out, given the wall will most likely be opened up at this time anyway.
I’m not sure what to use for flooring!
There are many types of flooring, however not all flooring is appropriate for the bathroom. You have to remember this is a wet area. Absorbent materials like carpet, wood, and laminates are not good choices. These materials can trap moisture and lead to problems with mold, rot, and termites. The best materials for a bathroom remodel project are sheet vinyl products or properly installed tile or stone.
I’m not sure what colors to choose!
Color is, of course, a very personal choice. When making color choices, unless you plan on living in the house forever, it is wise to keep your color choices for fixtures like tubs, toilets, and shower units somewhat neutral. The same is true for large areas of tile on the walls. These are the most expensive items to change out later. Bold color can be introduced with wall paint colors and accent pieces or wall hangings. Paint colors can be easily changed later to suit someone else’s taste.
How many people will be working on my bathroom remodeling project?
Our craftsmen are skilled in all the areas needed to complete most bathroom remodels on their own. On most projects, you will be working with the same craftsman from start to finish. On larger projects, we may have a second craftsman on site to assist on the project as well. We do what it takes to make sure your bathroom remodel project is done to our high standard of service and guarantee.
I need to modify my bathroom for handicap accessibility.
Can you help me with this? Yes! We are certified through the National Association of Home Builders as Certified Aging-in-place Specialists (C.A.P.S) as recognized by A.A.R.P. We understand all of the important ways to help make your home easier for you to live in with modifications to your bathroom, including features like roll-in showers, grab bars, lighting, and widening doors.
