Remove the Tub and Put in a Shower

Stepping into a Shower is Safer than a Bathtub

Stepping into your bathtub can be a dangerous maneuver.

We recently had the opportunity to help Mr Flanagan update his small 5 x8 bathroom. A very common size in Wichita homes.

Mr Flanagan recently developed Lou Gehrig’s Disease.  Even with the help of an aid from the Veteran Administration, stepping in and out of his bathtub was becoming difficult and dangerous.

Before we began the remodel, it was important to talk with Mr Flanagan to understand his current condition and also to plan for his future needs.

Together, we decided to do the following:

  • Remove the tub shower combo and replace with a low maintenance, low profile curb, Onyx shower pan and walls
  • Install new shower faucet with a hand shower wand
  • Install bench seat in the corner
  • Replace the old toilet with a 16.5″ high comfort height toilet
  • Replace the vanity with a taller one and install an Onxy vanity top
  • Instead of a standard faucet, Mr Flanagan requested a tall goose-neck faucet that had a motion sensor so the water comes one when he places is hands in front of it.
  • Replace the slick flooring with a textured, loose lay vinyl
  • Install a grab bar outside the shower to help has he gets in and also install a grab bar inside the shower.

Because Mr Flanagan is a veteran, he qualified for a $6,000 grant from the VA through the Home Improvement & Structural Alterations grant (HISA).

His bathroom was an extra $2,000, above the $6,000, but with different materials your bathroom remodel can be brought down to below $6,000.  This way you may qualify for a bathroom modification without any money from your own pocket.

We understand the HISA process and can get your bathroom started in about 3 weeks from the time we submit your paperwork.

Click on the HISA link and start your application process with the VA now.
