Aging In Place Living Room Modifications

living room modifications for seniors

Your living room can become an obstacle course over time with tripping hazards such as scatter rugs, extension cords, level changes along with poor lighting.  Ways to address these problems involve not changing furniture layouts often, keep circulation paths of a minimum of 4 feet wide, furniture should have arms, no sharp edges and not swivel or rock. Make sure that the floor is kept clear of obstructions so that accidental slipping or falls do not occur.

If there is a level change, distinguish the edge or step with lights or railings to avoid falling. Make sure that lights can be kept on until a room is vacated.  Mount switches, thermostats and controls to an accessible height for use by someone in a chair or with limited reach.

Handyman Matters can perform all of these modifications easily with our professional craftsman. Let Handyman Matters assess your safety risks with our 50 point home safety assessment.
