Essentially, there are two places that you can break a sprinkler system: a main line (possibly when aerating) or a sprinkler head (usually when mowing a lawn). Breaking sprinkler heads is common, so if you happen to break one don’t worry.

A chopped or broken head will result in a water-wasting geyser, high water bills and eventually dead grass in your yard. If you happen to break a main line or the manifold within your sprinkler system, make sure to turn off the main valve to the sprinkler system, which is separate from the main shut off to the house. You want to make sure that the main valve is shut off so you do not waste water.
