Energy Matters (Feb 2010)
SRM
When heating or cooking units are not working properly, or if any fuel-burning appliance is not vented properly, carbon monoxide (CO) can build up inside your home. CO is called the "silent killer" because it is odorless, colorless and tasteless.
This winter, protect yourself from CO poisoning by taking these precautions:
- Have your heating system checked annually.
- Make sure your fireplace chimney and furnace venting system are clear of debris.
- Make sure fuel-burning heaters such as kerosene or oil are well ventilated, preferably to the outside.
- Install a CO alarm.
- Do not use a gas oven to heat your home.
- Do not idle a car in a garage.
If you suspect someone has been exposed to CO, get the person into fresh air and call 911.
